An hour later, my feet are burning in the stilettos I’m wearing. But there has not been a single incident. None of the men have tried to grope me. Not one of them has made a crude comment. Nothing but drink orders. Maybe I built this up in my head, making it into something that it’s clearly not. Just as I’m considering my possible misjudgment, the overhead lights spring to life, the girls that were dancing on the platforms disappear behind the curtains, and Samuel walks out onto the center stage with a microphone in hand.

Confused, I look around. Everyone has stopped talking. The waitresses stand frozen to their spots. What the hell is going on?

“It’s that time, gentlemen. We have some fine stock for you tonight. Bidding starts at 20K. You know the rules.”

Bidding? What is he talking about? A spotlight circles the room, round and round, going from one waitress to the next. Then it stops on me.

“It’s only fair to start tonight’s auction with fresh meat. Meet Maddie, first time here. Who’s going to get us started at 20K?” Samuel’s voice booms through the crowded space and paddles start flying up from the tables.

I scan my surroundings but my feet won’t move. It takes a while for my brain to catch up with me, to figure out just what’s happening in the moment. What the fuck did I get myself into? Though the better question is how the fuck am I going to get myself out of it?

The static of the microphone breaks through my panic. “We have one hundred and fifty. Do I hear one-fifty-five?”

Who the hell is prepared to pay one hundred and fifty thousand dollars for me? That’s insane. Laughable. Whoever it is they’re wasting their money, because I’m not sticking around any longer. Finally my feet start to move. I need to get out of here. I make it five steps before two men stop me in my tracks, each grabbing hold of one of my arms.

I yank my limbs back and scream. “No, let me go. This is a mistake. Stop. Let me go.” I may as well be begging to two sets of deaf ears. They don’t budge. Tears are now falling down my cheeks. Great, just what I need. I have to think. To figure a way out of here. I stomp my heel down on one of the guys’ feet. He curses but his grip doesn’t waver. Fuck.

“Three-hundred thousand,” a deep voice calls out over the crowd. A voice I know all too well. Looking up, I stare straight into the eyes of Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Furious. His face is as hard as stone, his eyes darker than I’ve ever seen them. “You have exactly three seconds to remove your hands from her before I cut your fingers off and shove them up your fucking ass,” he grits out through clenched teeth and a firmly set jaw, the hissed threat directed at the two men at my side. “Too late,” he adds exactly three seconds later.
